Job Title: Legal Counsel, Intellectual Property and Technology, Asia Pacific

Location: Shanghai, China (Goodyear regional HQ)

Reports To: Associate General Counsel, Intellectual Property & Technology

 

Job Summary: The Legal Counsel, Intellectual Property and Technology, Asia Pacific (APAC) will provide comprehensive legal support and advice on intellectual property (IP) matters, including patents, trade secrets, and general IP counseling. This role will serve as the regional lead for IP legal resources for Goodyear Technology Associates in the APAC region, ensuring the protection and strategic management of Goodyear's IP assets.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Intellectual Property Management:
    • Draft, prosecute, and/or direct the drafting/ prosecution of patent applications (utility/design patents) in the APAC region.
    • Support IP filings in China and other non-PRC jurisdictions.
    • Maintain regular communications with local China Legal Department teams and Legal teams in the U.S., Europe, Middle East, and Africa.
  2. IP Litigation and Dispute Resolution:
    • Conduct and prepare freedom-to-practice analyses and opinions regarding third-party IP rights.
    • Manage IP litigation/ disputes and IP enforcement initiatives relating to patents, trademarks, and trade secrets as they arise.
  3. Legal Counseling and Collaboration:
    • Draft and negotiate IP-related agreements, including non-disclosure, joint development, technical services, and technology licensing agreements.
    • Collaborate with Goodyear legal counsel across the globe and other stakeholders on IP provisions for commercial/ other agreements and export controls matters.
  4. Regional IP Leadership:
    • Serve as the primary IP point-of-contact for designated technology/business units across the APAC region.
    • Develop and advise stakeholders on IP strategies and risk mitigation.
    • Provide day-to-day IP advice and support.
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for trademark matters in the region, in close coordination with Goodyear's lead in-house trademark counsel.
  5. Training and Education:
    • Provide regular training to company employees on IP-related legal and contractual issues.

 

Key Qualifications:

  • Law degree from an accredited law school and qualified to practice law in China with PRC Patent Attorney Qualified.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience at an international law firm and/ or in-house multinational corporate legal department.
  • Proven track record in managing IP portfolios and handling IP litigation with a strong understanding of IP laws and regulations in the APAC region.

  • Fluency in English and Mandarin. Excellent communication skills (verbal/ written), with an ability to establish trusted partnerships with business and legal teams.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with an ability to develop business oriented and cost- efficient solutions.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a global team. Comfortable working across multiple time zones.
  • Demonstrating the highest level of ethical conduct and integrity.
  • Highly motivated, efficient, organized and detail oriented.
  • With sound judgement and with strong negotiation and consensus building skills.
